Thomas N. 'Tommy' Carney


FALLS VILLAGE — Thomas N. "Tommy" Carney, 42, of Belden Street and formerly of West Nyack, N.Y., died suddenly on Oct. 28, 2007, of a heart attack after being stricken at his home in Falls Village.

He was the husband of Carole (Purdy) Carney.

The newlyweds were married on Aug. 17, 2006.

Mr. Carney was born July 10, 1965, in Camden, N.J., son of the late Thomas N. Carney Sr. and the late Josephine (O’Farrell) Kaufhold.

For the past six years, Mr. Carney was the director of food services for Mountainside in North Canaan.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Carney is survived by his sisters, Derville Daly of Ireland and Kathleen (Carney) Ciavarella of Nanuet, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Patricia Purdy, and his father-in-law John M. Purdy; his nephews, Ciara’n and Tadhg, both of Ireland, and Johnny of Connecticut; his nieces, Faith and Nicole of Nanuet; and his grandmothers, brothers-in law, a sister-in-law, family and friends.

He will be sadly missed by all. Tommy, we will never forget you.

Local services will be held on Friday, Nov. 3. Calling hours will be at the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan from 11 a.m. to 12:30 pm. At 1 p.m., all are invited to a reception in his memory at Mountainside, Route 7 South, North Canaan. At 4 p.m., a wake service will be held in St. Joseph’s Church in North Canaan. From 5 to 6 p.m., visitation will resume at the funeral home.

On Saturday a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. in St. Paul’s Church Lake Road in Congers, N.Y. Following the mass the burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack.

Flowers may be sent, or donations in memory of Mr. Carney may be sent to Mountainside, PO Box 717, North Canaan, CT 06028.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
