Lady Highlanders Tie Shepaug, 2-2, in Double OT


The Northwestern girls soccer team gave up the game-tying goal on a penalty kick with just five minutes left in regulation Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Northwestern. Neither team was able to score during the two overtime sessions.

Amber LaPorte scored for the Highlanders in the first period, with an assist from Kristen Dombrowski, and was also credited with an assist on Kim Wilkinson’s second-period goal. Aizlyn Pieszak was credited with four saves in goal as the Highlanders improved to 7-5-2 in the Berkshire League.


Lewis Mills

Defeats Northwestern


The Lewis Mills girls field hockey team scored a goal in each half as they defeated Northwestern Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Burlington.

With the loss, the Highlanders dropped to 4-5-3 in the Berkshire League.


Terryville Sweeps

Gilbert, 3-0


The Terryville girls volleyball team made quick work of visiting Gilbert by sweeping the Jackets, 25-18, 25-15 and 25-16, Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Terryville.

Shelby Grant, Katie Townsend and Emily Griswald played well for the Jackets, who dropped to 3-13 for the season.


Litchfield Defeats

Gilbert, 1-0


The Gilbert girls soccer team suffered what had to be a very frustrating loss Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Walker Field in Winsted.

The Lady Jackets dominated play for the bulk of the game, but couldn’t find the net. The Jackets gave up a first-half goal that proved to be the game winner. They outshot the visitors by a 15-6 count, but Litchfield managed to hang on and pick up the win.

With the loss, Gilbert dropped to 8-4-2 in the Berkshire League.

Oliver Wolcott, 3-0


The Northwestern boys soccer team defeated Oliver Wolcott Tech Monday, Oct. 22.

Rob Hollis and Pat Evans scored goals for the Highlanders, who improved to 11-2 in the Berkshire League.


Housatonic Defeats

Gilbert, 5-3


The Housatonic boys soccer team defeated Gilbert Monday, Oct. 22, in Falls Village.

Jim D’Amico, Nathan Monka and Josh Louis each scored a goal for the Jackets, while Martin Brown had 10 saves in goal. With the loss, Gilbert dropped to 4-9 in the Berkshire League.

Through With Win


The Gilbert/Northwestern co-op football team finally broke into the win column as they defeated Windsor Locks 14-12 Saturday, Oct. 20, in Windsor Locks.

Tim Terwilliger was outstanding for the Jackets, rushing for 111 yards on 18 carries, one touchdown and a two-point conversion. Freshman quarterback Bobby Lippincott scored the other touchdown for the Jackets as they picked up their first win of the season against five losses. Matt Ryan also had a solid game, picking up 72 yards on 16 carries.


JV Jackets

Win Fifth Game


The Jackets made it a clean sweep on Monday when the junior varsity team defeated Windsor Locks 30-0 at Van Why Field in Winsted. The Junior Jackets improved to 5-1 for the season with the win in what has been an outstanding season.


Northwestern Defeats

Litchfield, 2-1


The Northwestern boys soccer team picked up a huge victory as they defeated Litchfield Saturday, Oct. 22, at home.

The Highlanders trailed 1-0 at the end of the first period, but second-half goals by Ben Hinman and Judson Shedd did the trick as the Highlanders improved to 10-2 in the Berkshire League. Hinman was also credited with an assist, as was Aaron Cutarelli, while Russell Dougan had four saves in goal.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
