Pink's NFL Picks

Last week’s record: 11-3; for the season: 65-36

Pick of the Week: 1-0; for the season, 6-1

Last week was the best of the year for me as I got to double digits in the win column. My Lock of the Week, Washington, managed to squeeze in as well. I thought my Buffalo and Detroit picks were gutsy and I’m happy that Tennessee won on the road. The Giants continue to roll, but my Steelers, unfortunately, took one on the chin in Denver.

It’s hard to imagine we’re already approaching mid-season, but that means the games become even more important. This is how I see this week and I’m sure you’re going to like my Lock of the Week.

Sunday, Oct. 28

Detroit at Chicago

— Can the Lions win on the road? There are signs that both teams may be going in the right direction, but I have a feeling the Bears are primed for this one. I’ll take Chicago, 24-21.

Oakland at Tennessee

— Fortunately for Raider fans, the team is showing improvement, but I’m not sure they are ready to win on the road against the scrappy Titans. I’ll take the home team in this one, Tennessee, 27-14.

New York Giants at Miami (Wembley, England)

— Talk about an away game! I just hope they use British announcers. The Giants are rolling and Miami is reeling, but this game will come down to who keeps their focus. I like the Giants in this one as my Lock of the Week, 30-13.

Cleveland at St. Louis

— I am somewhat of a closet Browns fan, but this game scares me for some reason. St. Louis is going to win a game at some point in the season and it could be this week, but I’ll stick with the Browns coming off a bye week, 21-17.

Philadelphia at Minnesota

— I’m not sure either team is a playoff contender, but on paper this looks like a good matchup. One thing’s for sure — the game will be low-scoring. I’m taking the Vikings in this one, 17-13.

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati

— Turnovers really hurt the Steelers last week in Denver and the Bengals always seem to play Pittsburgh tough. I just don’t see the Steelers dropping two in a row, though. I like Pittsburgh in this one, 31-27.

Indianapolis at Carolina

— I’m fully aware that everyone is touting the Patriots as the best team in the NFL, but don’t tell the Colts that. Monday night’s performance against the Jags was impressive, but can the team avoid a letdown leading up to their Nov. 4 matchup with the Patriots? It may take a rally, but I’ll take the Colts, 33-21.

Buffalo at New York Jets

— People can talk all they want about a quarterback change in New York, but the Jets should be more concerned with their defense. This should be a good game and I’m going with my heart in this one. I’ll take the Bills, 20-17.

Houston at San Diego

— The Texans lost a heartbreaker to the Titans, while the Chargers had the week off. San Diego cannot afford a home loss, so I’m sticking with the Chargers, 31-21.

Jacksonville at Tampa Bay

— Here are two teams with visions of the playoffs, both coming off losses. I don’t like the Jags on a short week on the road, so I’ll take the Bucs in this one, 20-16.

New Orleans at San Francisco

— I’m sorry, Saints fans, but I think you are in trouble. The 49ers are by no means world-beaters, but the Saints defense is shaky at best. I’m going with San Francisco in this one, 24-21.

Washington at New England

— The Redskins were fortunate to defeat Arizona at home, so what do think they’re going to do against the Patriots on the road? They’ll show up and get hammered, 37-14.

Monday, Oct. 29

Green Bay at Denver

— This is a key matchup for both teams. Will the bubble burst for the Packers or is Denver finally going forward? I’m not sold on either team yet, so I’ll stick with the Broncos in this one, 23-21.

Walking among the ‘Herd’

Michel Negroponte

Betti Franceschi

"Herd,” a film by Michel Negroponte, will be screening at The Norfolk Library on Saturday April 13 at 5:30 p.m. This mesmerizing documentary investigates the relationship between humans and other sentient beings by following a herd of shaggy Belted Galloway cattle through a little more than a year of their lives.

Negroponte and his wife have had a second home just outside of Livingston Manor, in the southwest corner of the Catskills, for many years. Like many during the pandemic, they moved up north for what they thought would be a few weeks, and now seldom return to their city dwelling. Adjacent to their property is a privately owned farm and when a herd of Belted Galloways arrived, Negroponte realized the subject of his new film.

New ground to cover and plenty of groundcover

Young native pachysandra from Lindera Nursery shows a variety of color and delicate flowers.

Dee Salomon

It is still too early to sow seeds outside, except for peas, both the edible and floral kind. I have transplanted a few shrubs and a dogwood tree that was root pruned in the fall. I have also moved a few hellebores that seeded in the near woods back into their garden beds near the house; they seem not to mind the few frosty mornings we have recently had. In years past I would have been cleaning up the plant beds but I now know better and will wait at least six weeks more. I have instead found the most perfect time-consuming activity for early spring: teasing out Vinca minor, also known as periwinkle and myrtle, from the ground in places it was never meant to be.

Planting the stuff in the first place is my biggest ever garden regret. It was recommended to me as a groundcover that would hold together a hillside, bare after a removal of invasive plants save for a dozen or so trees. And here we are, twelve years later; there is vinca everywhere. It blankets the hillside and has crept over the top into the woods. It has made its way left and right. I am convinced that vinca is the plastic of the plant world. The stuff won’t die. (The name Vinca comes from the Latin ‘vincire’ which means ‘to bind or fetter.’) Last year I pulled a bunch and left it strewn on the roof of the root cellar for 6 months and the leaves were still green.

Matza Lasagne by 'The Cook and the Rabbi'

Culinary craftsmanship intersects with spiritual insights in the wonderfully collaborative book, “The Cook and the Rabbi.” On April 14 at Oblong Books in Rhinebeck (6422 Montgomery Street), the cook, Susan Simon, and the rabbi, Zoe B. Zak, will lead a conversation about food, tradition, holidays, resilience and what to cook this Passover.

Passover, marked by the traditional seder meal, holds profound significance within Jewish culture and for many carries extra meaning this year at a time of great conflict. The word seder, meaning “order” in Hebrew, unfolds in a 15-step progression intertwining prayers, blessings, stories, and songs that narrate the ancient saga of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery. It’s a narrative that has endured for over two millennia, evolving with time yet retaining its essence, a theme echoed beautifully in “The Cook and the Rabbi.”
