One wish granted to Geer resident

NORTH CANAAN — Pam Flores headed to Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center one recent September day, only to find the room that her mom rarely left was... empty.

Janet Stiewing was down the hall in the lounge, it turned out, watching CNN. She wanted to get on top of the latest news so she could be part of family conversations.

"She is laughing, and more vibrant," Flores said of the change sparked by an extended visit from Mexico by her and her son, Ian Sanchez.

It had been 11 years since they were last together. In Sanchez’s 28 years, he’s seen his grandmother only half a dozen times. The last was in 1996, when the family gathered in Mexico.

When Stiewing won a chance to have a desire granted in Geer’s Just One Wish program, she didn’t have to think twice, although she harbored her wish for awhile.

The Just One Wish program has been granting wishes to Geer residents for the past several years. It is funded by donations. Residents are chosen randomly, then they make their wish. A common request is to visit a place that holds memories, or that the person has long wanted to see.

"I knew right away I wanted to see my family in Mexico. I guess I didn’t believe it could really happen."

Flores left North Canaan in 1974. With her husband, she homesteaded in the roughest part of his native country. There was no indoor plumbing and no means to travel back to Connecticut.

"Times are better, but there is no way we would have gotten here without Mom’s wish," she said. "Sixteen days here with her and the rest of the family is amazing."

They stayed at the Falls Village home of her brother and sister-in-law, RB and Candice Stiewing. A third sibling, Darcelle O’Connor, made her annual visit from Colorado earlier than usual, making it a true family reunion.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
