Legislators try to get 2009 Empire State Games

POUGHKEEPSIE — After a successful Empire State Games in 2005, Dutchess County Legislators are after the games for 2009.

The Empire State Games is a multi-sport Olympic-style event organized by the state featuring competitors from all across the state.

Dutchess County Republican Legislature Chairman and Pine Plains Representative Gary Cooper  said the 2005 event was a positive experience for both residents and area businesses.

“It was something for families to watch, and it created an infusion of money into local businesses, Cooper said. “It was an all around plus. Everybody talks about negatives and stuff, but I think the games were a huge success over here.

A resolution will be introduced in the Legislature asking representatives to support bringing the games back to the county in 2009.

“I don’t have a dollar value, but when you have people coming into town and eating someplace, there’s definitely a benefit, he said. “We want organizers to know that we support them and that hopefully they will come back.

Cooper said that the games, if they are held again in Dutchess County, would mainly be in the Poughkeepsie area.

“[Poughkeepsie] has all the facilities and the venues, he said. “You also have different sports stadiums and ball fields. If the games are held in the county, you will have a lot of people come into the area.

Cooper said that he did not know when game organizers will make their decision on where the 2009 event will be held.

The most recent event was held in Westchester County in July.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
