Stephen Emmett Owens

SHARON  — Dr. Stephen Emmett Owens, 75, of West Hartford and Sharon, died peacefully on Aug. 27, 2007, at his home in West Hartford. He is survived by his loving wife Eleanor Owens.

He was born on Jan. 7, 1932, in Waterbury, Conn., the son of the late Bridgett and James Owens, the 12th of their 13 children. He attended grade school in Naugatuck, and graduated from Naugatuck High School in 1949. In December 1952, he graduated from the Chiropractic Institute of New York. He also holds an advanced degree in chiropractic orthopedics from the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago and a masters in Integrative Medicine from Capital University in Washington, D.C.

He established his chiropractic practice in the Hartford area in 1953 and continued practicing there and at his office in Lakeville up until his death. Dr. Owens was president of the American Chiropractic Association from 1973 to 1974 and served as chairman of the board of the National College of Chiropractic during the 1980s.

He also served in many capacities and on many boards related to furthering the chiropractic profession over his entire life. These include, but are not limited to, serving as chairman of the board of the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company and most recently on board of trustees of the Capital University of Integrative Medicine in Washington, D.C.

He loved music and participated in many musical organizations, including the All State Choir, The Hartford Chorale and the HousaTonics.

He had been an investor in The Lakeville Journal Company since 1995.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five sons, Peter, Stephen, Timothy, Jonathan and Christopher; his stepdaughters, Eileen and Trish; Patricia Owens, the mother of his children; his four grandchildren, Emily, Hannah, James and Amanda; five sisters and one brother, Mary Owens, Margaret Brill, Hannah Suma, Theresa Kissane, Bridget Desmond and Col. Thomas Owens; and many other family and friends.

Calling hours from 4 to 8 p.m. will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. in West Hartford. On Friday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m., a Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Francis Church, 318 Church St. in Naugatuck.

A memorial service in the Salisbury area will be held at a future date.

Internment will follow the Mass at St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Connecticut Chiropractic Association Legal Fund, 2257 Silas Dean Highway, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.

Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
