Silo Ridge draft environmental statement to be reviewed this week after delays

AMENIA — Silo Ridge Country Club representatives canceled their scheduled appearance at Thursday night’s Planning Board meeting due to a town environmental consultant being on vacation.

However, the Planning Board has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall exclusively for the discussion on the Silo Ridge Draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS).

If the project is approved, Silo Ridge Country Club will become a four season resort, with a new hotel, single-family homes, town houses and a wastewater treatment plant.

Two weeks ago, the Planning Board and representatives from Silo Ridge reviewed a letter by Ted Fink, an environmental consultant hired by the town, who wrote that there were still issues that were not addressed in the more than 1,000 page long DEIS.

Before the meeting began, chairman George Fenn said Fink was on vacation, which is why representatives from the country club were not at the meeting.

The country club submitted its DEIS to the Planning Board for review on June 28.

At the meeting, town attorney Joel Russell said the board had 30 days to review the document to determine if it should be available for public review.

Despite the fact that the 30 days have expired, chairman Fenn said before the meeting that the deadline was “not a deadline, but rather just a guideline.

“We also told [Fink] that we could not come to a conclusion on his memo unless he was here, Fenn said. “Which is why Silo Ridge [representatives] called and said they were not going to attend."

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
