Ann S. Wahl

MILLERTON ­— Ann S. Wahl, 79, died at Sharon Hospital on Aug.6, 2007.

She was born in Franklin, N.J., on June 7, 1928, and had worked for Western Union in New Jersey before moving with her husband, Robert, to Millerton in 1967. In Millerton, she operated a Montgomery Ward and, later, a J.C. Penney catalog shop.

Mrs. Wahl served as a volunteer at Sharon Hospital and also for the Thriftique shop in Millerton, and was an active member of the Millerton Presbyterian Church.

She was an avid needle crafts worker and produced exquisite knitting projects.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Druback and her husband, Greg, of Stanfordville, N.Y.; a son, Brian Wahl of Mt. Laurel, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, Karen Howell Wahl of Millerton; a grandson, Peter Druback of Clinton Corners, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Celaya of Hyde Park, N.Y.; and a great-granddaughter, Claire Celaya of Hyde Park.

She was predeceased by her son, Daniel Mark Wahl, in February of this year; and by her brothers, John and Fred.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Millerton Presbyterian Church on Friday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m., the Rev. Nancy Thornton McKenzie officiating. Interment will follow in Irondale Cemetery, Millerton.

Friends may call at the Valentine Funeral Home, Park Avenue, Millerton, on Thursday, Aug. 9, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Wahl loved to read. With that thought in mind, donations in her memory may be made to the NorthEast-Millerton Library or to the Millerton Fire Department Ambulance Fund, both in Millerton, NY 12546.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
