Fred M. Sawyer

ANCRAM — Fred M. Sawyer, 61, died July 18, 2007, at the Samuel S. Stratton Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Albany, N.Y.

On Aug. 7, 1993, in Ancram he married the former Sandra Miller. She survives him at home.

He was born on Oct. 28, 1945, in Watertown, Conn., the son of the late Ella (Bogle) and Frederick Sawyer.

Mr. Sawyer had been employed as a paramedic and carpenter in the  Waterbury area until moving to Ancram in 1992.

He served with the United States Army Special Forces from 1963 to  1971, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a member and past commander of the Closson–Raught American Legion Post #1160 in Copake Falls, N.Y. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veteran’s, Blinded American Veteran’s and the Tri–County Council of Vietnam Veterans.

Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Scott Gendreau of Berlin, N.H.; two grandchildren, Alexis and Arik; a brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Betsy Eisenberg; and three nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Lorraine Gaudiosi.

Funeral services were held July 22 at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home in Copake, the Rev. Linda McEathron of the Copake United Methodist Church  officiating. Interment with full military honors was held July 23 at the Gerald B.H. Soloman Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
