Sophie Menchetti

DOVER PLAINS — Sophie Menchetti, 87, a longtime resident of Dover Plains, died July 20, 2007, at Loris Extended Care Facility in Loris, S.C.  

Mrs. Menchetti was born on Dec. 10, 1919, in Hudson, N.Y., the daughter of the late Mary (Karic) and Frank Lisnik. She graduated from Hudson High School.  

On Aug. 16, 1942, in Dover Plains, she married John Menchetti, who died June 24, 2002.  

Mrs. Menchetti worked as a supervisor at the Wassaic DDSO, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the New York State Civil Service Employees Association and a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Church.    

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Coulthard of Little River, S.C.; two grandsons, Sean Coulthard of Stockholm, N.J., and Peter Coulthard of Beacon, N.Y.; three great-grandsons, Mark, Calvin and Hunter; and two great-granddaughters, McKenzie and Gia.  

Calling hours will be Friday, July 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains. Graveside services will take place at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Dover Plains.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
