FFA celebrates a remarkable year

PINE PLAINS – The FFA celebrated a year of success at its annual banquet at Stissing Mountain High School last Friday night. Approximately 125 people attended.

According to the official New York state FFA site nysffa.org, the group’s mission is to provide young people with opportunities for leadership, growth, and career success. The group’s main focus is to educate students about agriculture and agri-science, and its importance in every day life.

Group advisor Christine MacNeil said that this year the group’s projects included an agriculture day at the high school, a food drive for Pine Plains Presbyterian church, a tractor show and a fall fundraiser.

"The list of what we accomplished this year is pretty extensive," Mac Neil said. "I’ve got a great group this year who all really worked hard and are really outstanding."

Heather Bartholf, 17, the group’s vice president, said her favorite activity was agricultural day at the high school.

" We had to get the barns ready, and we also had to set up the gym with tarps so we could set the tables up," Bartholf said. "Being in the FFA is a lot of work and fun at the same time."

Local resident Theo Aldridge, who graduated from high school in 1950, said that she wished females were allowed in the FFA back when she was a student.

"Females couldn’t be in clubs, the FFA, in the railroad or anything, and here I was a farm girl," Aldridge said. "But I am very proud of today’s FFA because they are a good organization."

Town Supervisor Gregg Pulver said that he was a member of the FFA back when he was in high school from 1978 to 1981.

"It’s the only curriculum that teaches the things that it does — pretty much everything that is important in life without necessarily going to college," Pulver said. "All of my leadership ability and all of my speaking ability comes from the FFA, and with this amount of people attending tonight’s banquet, the program will certainly grow through the roof."

Awards given out at Friday night’s ceremonies included:

Chapter Degree: Kristin Beattie, Cassandra Murphy and Ainsley Evans. The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
