Budget approved at town meeting May 11

SHARON — Town and education budgets for 2007-08 were approved at a town meeting Friday, May 11.

This year’s budget for the Board of Selectmen is $2,213,813. Next year’s budget will be $2,349,126, an increase of 6.1 percent.

This year’s budget for the Board of Education was $3,288,531. Next year’s budget will be $3,368,225, an increase of 2.42 percent.

A five-year Capital Improvement Plan was also approved at Friday’s meeting.

The plan calls for eight projects to be completed over the next five years, including: an addition to the town garage ($150,000), construction of a dog pound ($60,000), renovation of the building at 67 Main St. ($400,000), a new community hall ($350,000), a new culvert and headwalls at West Woods Rd. #2 ($30,000), a rehabilitation of Sharon Green ($50,000), repairs to two town bridges ($100,000) and renovations to town sidewalks ($500,000).

About 30 people attended the meeting, and all voted in favor of the spending plan.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
