Lois Evangeline (Goggins) Shaffer


MILLERTON —Lois Evangeline (Goggins) Shaffer, 81, died at Sharon Hospital on April 28, 2007, after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

She was the wife of Grenville "Granny" Shaffer, whom she married on May 18, 1950. He survives at home.

Born in Great Barrington, Mass., on Feb. 19, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Birdella (Humes) and Timothy Goggins. She was a 1943 graduate of Millerton High School.

In addition to being a loving wife, she was also a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Stahovec and her husband, Carl, Timothy Shaffer and his wife, Bonnie, Candace "Bubbles" Swart and her husband, Wayne, all of Millerton, and Tami Albers and her husband, Paul, of Copake Falls; her grandchildren, Tisha Rothvoss, Kelsey Stahovec, Timmy, Jason and Jeremy Shaffer, Lorinda Coulthard and Amy Petkovich; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, David.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Patrick Church on May 1, the Rev. John Durkin officiating. Interment will follow at Irondale Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to the Millerton Fire Department’s Ambulance Fund, Millerton, NY 12546.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
