Vivian June (Quick) Schaelchli


Millerton — Vivian June (Quick) Schaelchli, 84,of Millerton passed away April 15, 2007, at Noble Horizons after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Rudy Schaelchli.

Mrs. Schaelchli was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the daughter of the late Ellen (Ella) (Ackert) and Edmund S. Quick.

She was employed by the Poughkeepsie Trust Company from 1941 until 1954, when she married Rudy Schaelchli and moved to Bel Air Farms in Amenia. She was then employed by the First National Bank of Amenia until her retirement in 1985.

Mrs. Schaelchli loved seashells, seagulls, seahorses and meerkats. She especially enjoyed vacationing in Cape Cod with her children and grandchildren and was known for her early morning walks on the beach, searching for beachglass.

In her last months, her pleasure was crocheting a variety of items for her family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Rudy, at home; her daughter, Trudy Schaelchli of Falls Village; and her two grandchildren, Iris and Samuel Hermann.

The Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Noble Horizons, Salisbury, on Thursday, April 19, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Richard Taber officiating.

Interment will be in Irondale Cemetery, Millerton.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
