More Bach, More Beethoven And Golijov

Violinist Julia Fischer and pianist Milana Cheruyavska will perform at Union College, Schenectady, NY, April 5, at 8 p.m. Fischer, who is a protégé of violinist/conductor Lorin Maazel, made her New York City debut at age 19. She will perform the solo Violin Sonata in A, BWV 1003, by Johann Sebastian Bach; a Sonata for Violin and Piano, by Claude Debussy (1862-1918); and conclude with the Sonata in F for these two instruments, by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio is performing at the Colony Country Club on Friday, April 13, at 8 p.m. The program includes the Piano Trio No. 2 in B Minor, by Joachim Turina (1882-1949);  the “Arch-Duke Piano Trio†in B flat, Op. 97, by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1828); and Leon Kirchner’s Piano Trio No. 2. The Boston University Tanglewood Institute, which for so many years has helped gifted music students become professionals, will be the beneficiary of the proceeds of this concert. These concerts, which originally took place at the home of Richard Balsam, president of Renaissance Musical Arts, are now being held at the Colony Country Club, Vorheesville, NY, to accommodate a larger audience. The Bard Festival String Quartet, with violinists Laurie Smuckler and Patricia Sunwoo; violist Ira Wollar; cellist Robert Martin; and guest artist David Krackauer, clarinet, will perform in Bard College’s Olin Hall on Tuesday, April 10, at 8 p.m. The program will  include Oswaldo Golijov’s “The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind†and the String Quartet in A-Minor, Op. 132, by Beethoven. On Saturday, April 14, at 8 p.m., the Cassatt String Quartet will be the guests of the Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society, performing “Four Pieces for String Quartet, Op. 81,†by Mendelssohn; the String Quartet No. 5 in A Major, Op. 18, No. 5, by Beethoven; and the String Quartet No. 14, A flat Major, Op. 105, by Dvorak. This will be the last of nine concerts offered by the Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society this season. Its concerts are held at the Church of the Messiah, Route 9, in Rhinebeck, NY. The Walden Chamber Players are returning to Kiggins Hall at Emma Willard School, in Troy, NY, on April 14 at 8 p.m. Participating artists will be Fenwick Smith, flute; Richard Ranti, bassoon; Helen Chang, violin; Christof Huebner, viola; and Ashima Scripp, cello. Max Roger’s (1873-1916) Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola in G, Op. 141a, will open the program. It will conclude with Beethoven’s String Trio, Op. 9, No. 3. NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
