Bombers Suffer Defeat At Hands of Warriors

HARLEM VALLEY — "If we don’t start making good decisions, we’re not going to be able to beat a quality team like this. We’ve got our work cut out for us if we want to beat some of the better teams this season."

That’s what Pine Plains head coach Lester Funk said about Tuesday night’s game against Webutuck High School’s varsity boys basketball team.

The score of the game, which took place on the Warriors’ turf, was Webutuck 74, Pine Plains 62.

Yesterday morning, Funk said his Bombers "didn’t match the intensity" of the opposing team which, in his opinion, outplayed his squad.

"It’s the second game of the season. We really have to play better than we did last night," he said, also acknowledging that Webutuck head coach Peter Stefanowich leads a very good team. "They’re a great team, one of the best in the league. They have three really good guards."

Webutuck High School senior and captain Matt Pomeisl netted 21 points and 11 rebounds during the game.

Senior and co-captain John Cavaliere added 17 points. Johnathan Brinson contributed 14 points to the Warriors’ score and Alex Kravchuk scored 10 points

Jimmy Boyles was Pine Plains’ high scorer with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The win gives Stefanowich’s Warriors a 2-1 record.

Pine Plains is at .500 with a record of 1-1.

Webutuck’s next game is at Highland on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m.

The squad’s next home game is three days later against Ellenville at 6:45 p.m.

Pine Plains plays next on Tuesday, Dec. 26, at Millbrook at 5 p.m.

They play the same team at home on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m.

Stefanowich was unavailable for comment at press time.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
