Lady Bombers Lose By Slim Margin

PINE PLAINS — Stissing Mountain High School’s girls junior varsity basketball team lost a close one to Red Hook at home this past Tuesday night.

The final score was 37-29.

Dave Morgendahl, who is in his second year of coaching the squad, said his team was performing well until a "cold" third quarter (it was 14-13 Pine Plains at halftime), when Red Hook outscored the Lady Bombers by eight points.

"I think everybody played really well," the coach said.

Last year, Red Hook beat the junior varsity team by a large amount, so only losing by eight points is a considerable improvement, Morgendahl said.

The coach heads a young team, which is composed of mostly freshmen and a few eighth-graders.

Last season, the team finished close to .500, so if they rack up three or four wins this season, Morgendahl will be happy.

"It’ll be an improvement. I’m definitely trying to make them more defense oriented so they can keep other teams to around thirty points," he said.

Stissing Mountain’s top scorer was Courtney Odell, who racked up 11 points. Carley Rosato and Sara Woodward followed with six points each.

Red Hook’s Olivia Whelly and Amanda Shaffer did damage by scoring 11 and 13 points, respectively.

The Lady Bombers next game takes place at Coleman High School tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Stissing Mountain’s varsity team, headed by Coach Sue Simmons, will play the same team immediately after.

"I’m really proud of the girls. I’m doing different stuff with them and they’re really catching on. They’ve even improved since their first game this past Friday," the coach said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
