Fire company keeps new location in its sight

Special to The Millerton News

After a very quiet public hearing Sept. 4 where no one from the public spoke, it took the Planning Board just five minutes to approve a lot line adjustment to property owned by the Amenia Fire Company.

The 5.86-acre property is at 15 Cascade Road, north of the Old Palmer House and Little Professors Preschool. The company purchased the property last February with plans to build a new firehouse.

In an interview after the hearing, Chief Shawn Howard said the company’s plans are moving along slowly, but steadily.

“There is still no timeline or schedule on when we will build the new building, Howard said. “Right now we are still in the planning stages. We are talking to potential architects right now.

Company Captain Andy Murphy said architects met with company members to explain ideas and talk about the procedures behind building a new firehouse.

“The next part of the process is drawing up site plans and getting an engineer out there, Murphy said. “We’re in the process of getting ideas.

Howard said the company is accepting donations in order to help with building the new building.

In a previous interview, fire company President Warren Gordon said the current firehouse on Mechanic Street, built in 1947, just does not have enough space.

“We are bound by standards from both NFPA [National Fire Protection Association] and OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Administration]," Gordon said in July. "We are supposed to have showers and decontamination points in the station, among other things. We can’t even fit trucks into the building because the truck bays are too small and trucks are getting bigger. We are supposed to have a lot of things that we cannot do on this property. We have basically outgrown the building."

To help contribute to the fund to build a new firehouse, send a check or money order to:

The Amenia Fire Company
PO Box 166
Amenia, NY 12501

“Any help will be greatly appreciated, Howard said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
