Ode to an oak
The gasps from the driver’s seat were audible.
As my husband, son and I drove southwest on Route 41, the morning after a very thankful Thanksgiving in the wake of Sandy’s wrath, we gazed out the passenger-side window, anticipating the cherished sight of the Twin Oaks. A jolt. A gasp. A downed giant . . . laid out beside his brother. Had 250 years of vitality succumbed to weather, time and the inevitable? Say it isn’t so.
