CORNWALL — A rare white bison born June 16, just over the town line in Goshen, has special significance for some residents here.

The calf is sacred to American Indian tribes including the Oglala Lakota Nation Sioux in South Dakota. Later this month, members of the United Church of Christ, Cornwall will embark on an annual mission trip to the Pine Ridge reservation.

This past Saturday, July 28, Oglala representatives were here for a ceremony to name the bison. A white buffalo, which is believed to be a sign of good fortune, is said to be as rare as one in 10 million bison births.
