WINSTED — If you’re ever at Highland Lake and you think you see a car riding on the water, your mind is not playing tricks on you.

You’re seeing resident Jim Bartholomew driving his 1967 Amphicar, purchased this year from a dealer in California.

The car model was made from 1961 to 1968, with only 3,878 turned out by the Quandt Group in Germany.

According to the original brochure from the car provided by Bartholomew, the Amphicar was manufactured as “The Car That Swims.”

With a four-cylinder engine, the car can get up to 70 miles per hour on the road.
