Out for bear? Not this year


No bear hunting — at least not this year. A proposal by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) did not make it to the Legislature for consideration.

The draft bill would have created a lottery for a specific number of hunting licenses. The DEEP stated a need to thin the growing bear population in Connecticut, particularly in the Northwest and Northeast Corners.

It opened a debate over the actual need and benefits.
