Town vault gets scrubbing along with new paint

CORNWALL — A much-needed repainting of the Town Hall vault is done, under a modification of regulations aimed at preserving documents. Good thing, too, as it revealed a dangerous situation.

When Town Clerk Vera Dinneen proposed the work — the first repainting in more than 40 years — she consulted regulations and was dismayed to learn she would have to move all the land deeds and vital records to a vault elsewhere. It would be time-consuming and expensive, and there needed to be a way to maintain public access to records.
