In the heat of the month

Though it will have to go some to beat the July heat, August is the time when baseball games feel like they are being played in a sauna, and the season, which to me started the day before yesterday, is beginning to take its final shape.

The Sox score plenty of runs, but the guys on the mound, especially the starters, have let them down with a consistency that bespeaks a World Series hangover of biblical proportions.

MILLBROOK — The Millbrook Horse Trials are over, but they are not going to be forgotten any time soon, with four days of glorious summer weather. There was a burst of storms on Saturday that canceled one event, but otherwise the weather, camaraderie and sportsmanship were all that could be hoped for by those at the trials.

Dover Babe Ruth baseball team wins championship

editor@millertonnews.com

DOVER — The Dover Babe Ruth team was victorious over Region One at the championship game on Wednesday, July 31. The game was played at home, and drew a crowd of fans and supporters for both teams.
According to team parent Alicia Noonan, the team pulled together with Alex Marino “picking up the win in relief with 11 K’s to shut down Region One.”
A “K” is a swinging strikeout, according to Wikipedia.
Marino helped energize the offense with a triple in the bottom of the fourth, with Dover trailing 3-0.

I was a right handed power hitter.
I hate shortstops.
With a vengeance.
You see, back in the day, power hitters were supposed to pull the ball all the time; it’s where you got your power. Doubles were acceptable; home runs were expected. So, we power guys would hit up on the ball a la Ted Williams and look to the fences.
