NORTH CANAAN — Energy savings are contributing to a school budget proposal for 2011-12 that is heading toward a decrease over current spending.

Plans are also in the works to make North Canaan Elementary School more energy efficient.

An energy audit conducted on town buildings recommended most of the windows at the school be replaced. Except for those in the 1991 addition, the windows are from the original 1955 construction. Swapping pneumatic heating system thermostats to digital ones was also recommended. The latter is estimated to save $29,000 per year.
