50 years ago — January 1962

Jay Gano, son of Mrs. Albert Borden of Salisbury, has qualified for the Rifle Team at the New York Military Academy at Cornwall-on-Hudson.

SHARON — George Lamb was elected Chief of the Sharon Fire Department at its annual meeting last Monday evening. Mr. Lamb, who had been foreman of the department for some time, replaces David F. Duffy who resigned as Chief after 12 years of service in that position.

Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gorat became the parents of a baby girl at Sharon Hospital last Monday evening. The baby is the first great-grandchild of Mrs. John Bogue of Niantic and the first grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. William Haskell of Sharon. Her paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gourbounoff of Millerton. Mr. and Mrs. Gorat, whose apartment was burned out in the fire at the Hain Dance Studio Building on Nov. 13, are now renting the John Martin house in Ellsworth.

25 years ago — January 1987

Kelly Elizabeth Bartin, weighing seven pounds, 15 ounces, arrived at 5:24 a.m. Tuesday to become the first baby born at Sharon Hospital in 1987. She is the daughter of Susan and Bill Bartin of Dover Plains, and joins her 15-year-old brother Jason, and sisters Kari Lynn, 11, and Bobbie Rose, 7.

FALLS VILLAGE — Despite the sharp decline in world oil prices over the last 18 months, expansion of the Northeast Utilities hydroelectric facility will begin as scheduled in 1987, according to Plant Supervisor Miles Blodgett.
