ANCRAMDALE — Robert D. Schiffer, 80, a 39-year resident of Ancramdale, formerly of Wassaic, died Aug. 21, 2011, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Schiffer was a farmer and truck driver at Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic for 39 years, retiring in 1986.

He was born May 2, 1931, in Poughkeepsie, the son of the late Grace (Hardin) and Hubert Schiffer. He was a graduate of Amenia High School.

Fifty-six years ago on July 7, 1955, he married Vivian Tripp, who survives at home.

For years, Mr. Schiffer was a coach for Farm Team, Little League and Babe Ruth baseball in Amenia. He was a member of the Amenia softball team, the Harlem Valley Golf Course league in Wingdale and the Mabbettsville bowling league. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert Schiffer of Wassaic and Craig Schiffer and his wife, Toni, of East Meadow, N.Y.; two daughters, Cherie Schiffer of Millerton and Sharon Collins-Fretwell of Wassaic; five grandchildren, Joshua Collins and his wife, Aniece, Jesse Fretwell, Hannah Schiffer, Lauren Schiffer and Alex Schiffer; and two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Hayden Collins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Marion West, Gladys Campion and Dorothy Bucey; and three brothers, Foster, Roger and Harry Schiffer.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Hufcut Funeral Home in Dover Plains. Funeral services will take place Friday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, the Rev. William Mayhew officiating. Burial will follow at Amenia Island Cemetery in Amenia.
