Not just a new bridge; a near miracle, too


CORNWALL — As promised, the new Lower River Road bridge opened before Thanksgiving, allowing, after 12 long weeks, vehicle access for residents of four homes on the dead-end street.

Final paving was done Nov. 17. The bridge was officially opened Nov. 18.

It remains a single-lane span, although it is longer than the one that was destroyed Aug. 28. Hurricane Irene may have been downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hit northern Connecticut, but massive quantities of rain runoff turned Mill Brook into a raging torrent filled with debris.
