Martha (Boschen) Porter

SALISBURY — Martha (Boschen) Porter, 96, died peacefully at Noble Horizons on June 17, 2011.

She was born in Terra Ceia, N.C., on Jan. 22, 1915, daughter of the late Lillian (Wilkinson) and William Boschen.

Martha graduated from St. Mary’s Hall in Burlington, N.J., and studied painting at The Art Students League. She worked in fashion and interior design in New York City, was a member of The Fashion Group and The National Arts Club, and moved to northwest Connecticut in the early 1960s.

She was a photographer/journalist for The Lakeville Journal and a freelance photographer for the rest of her life. Her photographs appeared both locally and nationally.

Martha taught photography at The Barlow School and served on the boards of Music Mountain, the Shadon Creative Arts Foundation, Chamber Music at St. John’s, Women’s Support Services and The Chore Service. She was for many years president of The Martha Boschen Porter Fund, Inc. (now The Boschen Fund), which she created and which provides support to artists in the Tri-state region.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Terrall.

She is survived by her cousin, Martha Ackermann of Asheville, N.C.; four stepchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and many devoted friends.
