Kathleen Brown

TORRINGTON — Kathleen “Kay” Brown, 92, of Valerie Manor, Torrington, died Feb. 15, 2011, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. She was the widow of Raymond H. Brown following 30 years of marriage.

She was born on March 21, 1918, in Winsted, daughter of the late Alice (Chatfield) and Thomas Gurney.

She worked for the state of Connecticut and Oliver Wolcott Technical school prior to having her children and becoming a stay-at-home mother. She was a Girl Scout leader and the president of the New Hartford Garden Club, baked and decorated cakes, made clothes for her family and others and traveled to Acadia National Park. On Friday night, “Mrs. B’s house” was the place to be invited for her macaroni and cheese.

She returned to work as the site manager for the Blanche McCarthy Senior center nutrition program until her retirement in 1994. She lived at Chestnut Grove for 15 years, where she made many friends and cross-stitched many beautiful angel pictures. In recent years, she lived at Valerie Manor, where she was active in crafts, bingo and painting. As president of the Resident Council, she advocated for the residents and staff and spent many hours running the resident gift shop.

She is survived by her children, Kate and Larry Chase of Barkhamsted, Keith and Gail Brown of Simsbury and their children, Amanda and Scott Roberts of Granby, Ashley and Michael Witkowski of Jay, Vt., Alicia Brown of Simsbury and Bobby Brown of Torrington; and her great-grandchildren, Meghan and Scotty Roberts. She will be missed by many caring friends.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Feb. 21 at St. Joseph Church, Winsted. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Valerie Manor Recreation Fund, 1360 Torringford Street, Torrington, CT 06790.
