LAKEVILLE — Finally! The surface of Lake Wononscopomuc was completely ice-free as of the evening of Tuesday, April 5.

A month ago the ice began to soften, but the recent cold weather, especially the nights, caused the ice to hang on — despite some heavy winds.

However, the slightly warmer temperatures and rain this past week finally did the trick.

Ice in was Dec. 30, so the number of days the lake was completely covered in ice comes to 96. This is somewhat more than the average of the last decade.

The latest date for ice out that I am aware of is April 13, about eight years ago.
