BARKHAMSTED — Squires Tavern, located at 100 East River Road at the edge of People’s State Forest, is not a place to get alcoholic beverages or spend the night.

Rather, the building, built some time around 1795, serves as a museum of local history and is operated by the Barkhamsted Historical Society.

According to Historical Society President Paul Hart, who volunteers at the tavern along with his niece, Kristina Napolitano, the building itself was owned by local farmer Bela Squire and his family.
