Henry ‘Harry’ N. Orphal

STANFORDVILLE, N.Y. — Henry “Harry” N. Orphal, 86, passed away Feb. 16, 2011, at home. He was the husband of Betty M. (Depken) Orphal, whom he married in Queens, N.Y., on Jan. 2, 1949.

He was born in Queens on Dec. 12, 1924, the son of the late Elsie and Henry G. Orphal.

Mr. Orphal was owner and operator of Glendale Plumbing & Heating Company in Queens.

He grew up in Stanfordville and graduated from Pine Plains High School. He returned in 1991 to retire in Stanfordville.

Mr. Orphal served with the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army and Merchant Marine. He spoke of happy memories playing the tuba in the band, which was his saving grace.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Ridgewood, N.Y.; and a member of the Stanford Grange No. 808, where he held the position of gatekeeper. He was also a member of the Free and Accepted Masons.

In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, he is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Hall and her husband, Spencer, and Nancy Hickey and her husband, Mike; four grandchildren, Corielle Lopez, Zachary Schwartz, Adam Barkey, Travis Barkey; and a great-granddaughter, Isabella Lopez.

Calling hours are 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains. A reception will follow at Uncle Sonny’s Café in Stanfordville.

Funeral services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
