Guilty plea in sexual assault case

NORTH CANAAN — A North Canaan man will go to jail after pleading guilty to the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl last summer.

Michael Laurel, 26, was sentenced at Litchfield Superior Court on March 4 to 18 months in prison, followed by 10 years probation. He agreed to plead guilty to second-degree sexual assault, significantly reducing the potential penalties for felony charges.

He was arrested Aug. 8, 2010, and charged with first-degree sexual assault, first-degree unlawful restraint and risk of injury to a minor.
