Gabor ‘Gabby’ Farkas

AMENIA — Gabor “Gabby” Farkas, 74, died at his home on July 10, 2011, surrounded by loving family and friends.

He was born in Tet, Hungary, on Jan. 14, 1937, the son of the late Margit and Gyula Farkas. In January 1957, he made the journey from Tet alone to the United States to begin a new life. Here he met his loving wife Elizabeth Pinczes, who also made the journey to the United States with her own family.

On Nov. 26, 1960, they wed at the Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia.

He was retired, and had worked at Kent Manufacturing Company and A.W. Manufacturing as a machinist.

Gabby was an avid Yankee fan whose favorite player was Derek Jeter. He enjoyed gardening, bird-watching and taking walks on the Rail Trail. He was a lifetime active member of the Amenia Volunteer Fire Company. The Amenia firemen became his extended family.

He was an active supporter of many town events, including baseball and softball games.

In addition to his wife, Gabby is survived by his children, Claire Rundall of Pine Plains, Thomas Farkas of Pine Plains and Margaret Massey of Avon Park, Fla; his loving sons-in-law, Larry Rundall Jr. and Timothy Massey; his grandchildren, Nicole Kosiorek of Lee, Mass., Andrew Rundall of Pine Plains and Jessica Farkas and Tammy Farkas of Elizaville, N.Y.; and his sisters, Jolan Torok and Margit Gyorfi, and brother Isvan Farkas of Tet.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Gyula Farkas Jr., Dezso Farkas and Zolti Farkas.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15, at Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia. Burial will follow at Amenia Island Cemetery.

Calling hours will be at the Kenny Funeral Home, 41 Main Street, Sharon, from 4 to 8 p.m.Firefighter services will be at 7 p.m.
