Eileen M. Strauss

AMENIA — Eileen M. Strauss, 79, a lifelong resident of Amenia, died peacefully at her home on March 29, 2011.

Born Jan. 27, 1932, in Sharon, she was the daughter of the late Florence (Culligan) and John McEnroe. Eileen graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Amenia and attended Krissler Business School in Poughkeepsie. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Beauty Culture in Amenia.

Mrs. Strauss was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia. On Aug. 16, 1952, she married Guenther Strauss in Amenia. Mr. Strauss died Nov. 21, 1999.

Mrs. Strauss was the chef and co-owner of the Delavergne Farms Inn in Amenia for many years. She then worked at the Wassaic Developmental Center as a therapy aide until her retirement in 1985. She also was a hairdresser at various salons in the Amenia area.

She is survived by her two sons, Shane Strauss and his wife, Donna, of Standfordville and Darryl Strauss of Amenia; two brothers, T. Paul McEnroe of Middletown, R.I., and Robert McEnroe of Painted Post, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Shana, Sayre and Tyler Strauss; one great-grandson, Lucan Strauss; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, John “Jack” McEnroe of Amenia and Alfred “Al” McEnroe of Dover Plains.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 1 at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial followed at Amenia Island Cemetery.
