Charlotte Newton

KENT — Charlotte Newton, 96, of South Kent, passed away on April 16, 2011, at the Kent Health Facility. She was the wife of William H. Newton.

Mrs. Newton was born Sept. 24, 1914, in Danbury, daughter of the late Clara (Beyer) and Eric Hagman. She was a graduate of Kent Center School, Connecticut State College and the University of Connecticut, where she excelled in basketball and field hockey.

She was the first homemaking teacher in the former Washington High School. She also taught in Seymour, Suffield and Wethersfield high schools. She became a certified elementary schoolteacher at the former Danbury State College.

After teaching homebound students, she became a full-time schoolteacher at Kent Center School, teaching first through fourth grades. She retired in 1979 after 40 years of teaching.

Mrs. Newton was active in the First Congregational Church of Kent as a Sunday school teacher, a church deacon for several years and a junior choir organist. She was also a member of the Grange for more than 70 years.

In addition to her husband of 68 years, she is survived by a daughter, Carol McCann, and her husband, Frank of Kent; three grandchildren, Kathy McCann, Ane Starr and her husband, Mathew, and Bill McCann; and four great-grandchildren, Katherine, Sammy, Rigby and Will.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, April 30, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the care of the Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford.
