MILLERTON — A Route 22 telephone pole was smashed into three large pieces on Thursday, Dec. 22, after it was hit by a driver who allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, said a Dutchess County Sheriff Deputy on the scene who declined to give his name because he was not authorized to speak with the press.

An off-duty Central Hudson worker happened to drive by the scene shortly after the accident occurred. He called in the accident to his company, which quickly delivered a new telephone pole to be installed.
