Selectmen approve proposed budget

WINSTED — The Board of Selectmen approved Town Manager Dale Martin’s proposed budget of $33,694,367 for fiscal year 2013-2014 at a public hearing held on Thursday, April 4, at Pearson Middle School.
The vote was 6-1, with Republican Selectman Ken Fracasso the lone dissenting vote.
If the proposed budget is approved by voters, the tax rate will be set at 31.21 mills.
Last October, at a budget referendum, residents approved the fiscal year 2012-2013 town budget, the fourth one proposed by the board, for $30,932,241.

Battle of brains at annual NCCC Jeopardy tournament

WINSTED — Northwestern Connecticut Community College held its seventh annual Jeopardy Challenge on Friday, March 22.
Four teams of students participated in this year’s event: The History Association, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the Student Senate and the Vet Tech Club.
Each group had to raise at least $250 as an entry fee, with all proceeds donated to charity.
This year participants raised $1,000 for the Friendly Hands Food Bank in Torrington.

‘Good Lessons From Bad Women’ performed at NCCC

WINSTED — New York City actress Dorothy Leeds brought her one–woman play “Good Lessons From Bad Women” to Northwestern Connecticut Community College on Thursday, March 28.
Performing at the college’s Greenwoods Hall, Leeds resurrected numerous historical figures throughout women’s history — from Eve in the Garden of Eden, to China’s Empress Wu Zetian, who lived from 625 to 705 A.D., to 1930s Hollywood actress Mae West and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Mad River Literary Festival celebrates 17 years

WINSTED — The English Department at Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC) will get up close and personal with noted authors next week as it hosts the 17th annual Mad River Literary Festival.
As in previous years, this year’s events will feature a mix of poetry and prose, with authors hailing from the Connecticut and upstate New York literary scenes. This year’s festival runs Wednesday and Thursday, April 10 and 11.

Everyone was a winner at The Brain Show

WINSTED — It was all fun and brain games for Hinsdale Elementary School and Pearson Middle School students as the school district held The Brain Show at The Gilbert School on Thursday, March 28.
The event was organized by the school district’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), which hired the Brain Show Company out of Canadensis, Pa.
The Brain Show was held like a typical television game show, with four podiums for teams of school students to buzz in and answer questions.

Blumenthal tours Gilbert and NW7

WINSTED — U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D) stopped in Winsted on Monday, April 1, in a continuation of his tour to promote proposed school safety legislation.
Blumenthal met with school district and town officials in his tours of both The Gilbert School and Northwestern Regional High School.
Blumenthal is the co-sponsor of the School and Campus Safety Enhancement Act, which passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 12.

Gilbert sends letter of demand to town

WINSTED — At the Monday, April 1, Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Town Manager Dale Martin presented the selectmen with a letter from Gilbert School Superintendent Anthony Serio accusing the town of violating its contract with the school.
The letter, which was sent by Serio on Tuesday, March 26, is addressed to Martin, the town of Winchester and Winchester Board of Education Chairman Susan Hoffnagle.
“The town of Winchester and the Winchester Board of Education failed to timely pay The Gilbert School’s monthly tuition invoices for December 2012 and January 2013,” Serio wrote.

Local cafe has new owner and name

WINSTED — There’s a new place in town for coffee, breakfast and lunch. Sky’s Cafe and Lounge has opened on 64 Main St.
The cafe opened in place of Rachel’s Bakery and Cafe, which opened in September 2012 and closed this February after six months of operation. The spot was also previously the home of the Green Room.
New owner Coty Reeve said he purchased everything that was previously owned by former cafe owner Rachel Reeve for Sky’s Cafe, including furniture and cooking equipment.

Pre-manufacturing program students graduate

WINSTED — Days and weeks of hard work paid off for 12 Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC) students who graduated from the college’s pre-manufacturing certificate program on Thursday, March 28.
The program, which is in its fourth year at the college, is a six-month, noncredit program where students learn skills relating to manufacturing.
Skills taught during the program include manufacturing concepts, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, blueprint reading and computer literacy.
