COLEBROOK — The fourth annual Cardboard Boat Regatta was held as part of the Colebrook Fair on Saturday, Sept. 3. Using only cardboard and duct tape, both of which were supplied by the YMCA’s Camp Jewell, participants had to build their own vessels to bring to the competition at the Colebrook Pond. 

Boats needed to be able to be paddled out to a certain point in the pond, maneuver around a buoy and paddle back to the shore with the fastest time in each category taking home the prize. Twenty-one boats were entered this year in seven categories based on ages and...

A belated celebration

Northwestern Regional High School girls basketball coach Fred Williams tallied his 500th career win when his team beat Litchfield Jan. 28, 2010. The humble coach let the milestone pass unremarked. His family, however, felt he deserved some recognition and organized a small celebration at Northwestern’s Feb. 16 game against crosstown rival The Gilbert School. Above, Williams stands with his team as the players are called to center court before the game. Williams notched another win that night as the Lady Highlanders beat Gilbert 59-19.

Cowboys drop Jackets in season finale, 61-51

LITCHFIELD — The Gilbert School boys basketball squad battled Litchfield in the final game of an extraordinary season on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The Jackets scrapped with the Cowboys through all four quarters, but ultimately took a 61-51 road loss that left an unfortunate sour aftertaste to an otherwise strong season.

Jackets and Highlanders split victories in back-to-back games

WINSTED — Northwestern Regional High School hosted its crosstown nemesis, The Gilbert School, in back-to-back basketball games on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Northwestern’s ladies opened the evening by hammering the Jackets 55-19, but Gilbert’s boys had the last word, taking home a hard-fought 79-69 victory.

Gilbert’s woes were obvious from the tip-off as they struggled to ignite their offense and get beyond Northwestern’s defensive barricade.

Chiefs squash Jackets, 86-55

WINSTED — The Gilbert boys basketball squad hosted a successful and dangerous opponent in the Nonnewaug Chiefs on Monday, Feb. 14. Nonnewaug, who sullied the Jackets’ perfect season earlier this year, took an early lead and pulled far away in the second half, seizing an 86-55 win.

Wamogo wipes out Jackets, 76-38

WINSTED — A few days after claiming their second win of the season in a 63-45 road victory at Wolcott Tech, the Gilbert girls basketball team faced Wamogo at home on Tuesday, Feb. 8, where despite offering a strong start, the Lady Jackets suffered a blowout 76-38 loss.
