COLEBROOK — The fourth annual Cardboard Boat Regatta was held as part of the Colebrook Fair on Saturday, Sept. 3. Using only cardboard and duct tape, both of which were supplied by the YMCA’s Camp Jewell, participants had to build their own vessels to bring to the competition at the Colebrook Pond.

Boats needed to be able to be paddled out to a certain point in the pond, maneuver around a buoy and paddle back to the shore with the fastest time in each category taking home the prize. Twenty-one boats were entered this year in seven categories based on ages and...

BARKHAMSTED —  The Pleasant Valley Fire Department held their annual Super Bowl fundraiser on Sunday, Feb. 5.
Lines were out the door of the firehouse as members worked hard to serve family, friends and fire department supporters fan-favorite appetizers and homestyle meals as they enjoyed the Super Bowl on a large screen television.
At the event, 65-year department member Francis Lattizori said that he looks forward to the event every year.

Gilbert girls basketball team edges out Housatonic

Standing staunch against top-dog Housatonic (16-2), the Yellowjackets dug in, rallying late and holding off a furious last-ditch effort by the Mountaineers to secure a 39-38 upset.

Northwestern boys defeat Terryville

WINSTED — Not quite in midseason form, the Northwestern Regional High School boys varsity basketball team (10-2) still did enough to overcome a tepid opening quarter and a lackadaisical finish to beat Terryville (6-7), 67-56, on Friday, Jan. 27.
Looking more like deer frozen in the headlights than galloping bucks, the Highlanders trailed the Kangaroos, 25-17, at the end of one before finding their rhythm in the second, outscoring Terryvile, 25-11, in that quarter.

Gilbert boys fall, 86-29

WINSTED — A tough season for the Gilbert School varsity boys basketball team (1-11) got a little uglier on Monday, Jan. 30, as Canton (11-2) rolled into Winsted and battered the Yellowjackets to the tune of 86-29.
Although Gilbert ensured they would not go winless by beating Lichfield 40-37 on Jan. 20, the rebuilding continues for head coach Mark Douglass and his young squad.

NWR7 boys basketball triumphs over Gilbert School

WINSTED — During the second half of a rivalry doubleheader at The Gilbert School on Friday, Jan. 13, a fast and sharp Northwestern Regional High School (7-1) overwhelmed the rebuilding Yellowjackets (0-8) to continue their recent domination of the traditionally close rivalry.
Feeding off an electric home crowd, taking the floor right after the girls’ team mopped up the Highlanders, Gilbert got off to a fast start but could not stem the more athletic, more aggressive Highlanders as Northwestern ran away for an eventual 78-42 victory.

Pink’s NFL Picks

Last week’s divisional games: 3-2; for the playoffs, 5-3.
I’m fully satisfied with 3-1, but again I was victimized by picking one of my two favorite teams, knowing full well they were going to have a tough time winning. The Seahawks are not the team this year that they have been in the past few years, and they certainly can struggle on the road, especially against a team with the firepower of the Falcons.
