COLEBROOK — The fourth annual Cardboard Boat Regatta was held as part of the Colebrook Fair on Saturday, Sept. 3. Using only cardboard and duct tape, both of which were supplied by the YMCA’s Camp Jewell, participants had to build their own vessels to bring to the competition at the Colebrook Pond.

Boats needed to be able to be paddled out to a certain point in the pond, maneuver around a buoy and paddle back to the shore with the fastest time in each category taking home the prize. Twenty-one boats were entered this year in seven categories based on ages and...

Gilbert falls to Housy in varsity baseball

WINSTED — The Gilbert School’s Yellowjackets varsity baseball team (6-13) suffered a late-season setback at home as they continue to struggle down the stretch, falling 1-14 to a focused Housatonic Valley Regional High School squad (14-5) on Thursday, May 18.
With little room for error in a late push for a postseason berth, Gilbert’s bats were ice-cold, and junior righty Austin Smith gave up seven earned on eight hits over three innings before being pulled.

NWR7 varsity softball team inches closer to title

WINSTED — All season long, the Highlanders (17-2) have refused to let anything get in the way of their goals, racking up win after dominant win on their way to the best record in the Berkshires.
With a chance to clinch at least a share of the league title at home against Lichfield (6-14) on Monday, May 22, the biggest obstacle Northwestern faced might have been the weather. The weather for the game was a drizzling, ugly rain that made balls slippery and threatened to send the teams home early without a conclusion.
The Highlanders would have none of that.

Wamogo whams Gilbert in softball

WINSTED – Taking on Wamogo in a double header on Monday, May 8, a depleted Yellowjackets squad (2-11) was swept unceremoniously by the Warriors (11-2), losing 16-0 in the early game and 15-0 in the nightcap.
With their most experienced and talented pitcher, sophomore Anna King, still out with a concussion, and facing one of the most dynamic athletes in the league in Wamogo’s Cyrena Zemaitis, Gilbert could offer little resistance to the league frontrunners.
