Kicking off garden season with plant shopping and design

GOSHEN — March might seem like a dud month for gardening, with its short days and frozen soil. With spring edging closer, this month is actually perfect for one of the most exciting parts of caring for land: imagining potential and setting a plan in motion.
One of the best tools our region has to offer gardeners in their winter visioning is the Northwest Conservation District’s web store, which went live on Feb. 18 at www.nwcd.org.

Telling the family story

A perc of being a newsman or local historian is you get to meet a lot of interesting people and sometimes gain access that gives surprising results.
Various of my writings have explored the black experience in South Berkshire County, Mass. Through my research into the story of Great Barrington native William E.B. Du Bois, I got to know his adopted son, the late David Graham Du Bois, and his great-grandson, Arthur McFarlane II of Colorado. And last week, I enjoyed a dinner with another great-grandson, Jeff Peck of Houston, Texas.

CORNWALL/SHARON — The Civic Life Project (www.civiclifeproject.org)has received a grant of $6,000 from The Buchanan Fund, a fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation to adapt and expand its existing program for middle schools.
The grant, announced today by Dominique Lasseur, co-founder of the Civic Life Project with Catherine Tatge, will enable eighth grade students from Cornwall Consolidated and Sharon Center schools to produce short civic-themed films on public issues of their choice.

Municipal Salaries 2018-19

As towns make their way through budget planning for the 2019-20 fiscal year, which begins July 1, salaries of administrators will once again be discussed. In general, pay increases for selectmen are rare; most other town employees are given a flat pay raise that is applied to all at Town Hall and on the town crew.

‘Green Book’

Academy Award voters declared “Green Book” the film of the year on Sunday, Feb. 24. That happened to be one of the few nominated movies I have seen. For some reason, my picture attendance has run mostly to bio-pics. I thought Rami Malek captured Freddie Mercury’s drive in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I admired two non-nominees, John C. Reilly as the fading but determined Hardy in “Stan & Ollie” and Tom Waits as the shot-through prospector in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”

Harsh reaction to proposed school consolidation plan

GOSHEN —  Town leaders who were at the Northwest Hills Council of Governments (NHCOG) meeting on Thursday, Feb. 14, expressed their concerns about three bills currently being deliberated in the state Legislature.
The first proposed bill SB-454 was introduced in January by Senate President Martin M. Looney (D-11) and, if passed, would create a commission to implement the regional consolidation of school districts.
