John Findlay Scott

WEST CORNWALL — John Findlay Scott, 88, of West Cornwall, died Dec. 25, 2018, at home. He was the loving husband of Julia Mary (Boulton) Scott.

John A. Hemmerich

 SHARON — John Hemmerich passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 23, 2018, at the young age of 43.

He was born at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina of a Marine family. Being of a Marine family he traveled as a child. His family settled in Sharon after retiring from service.

He attended Sharon Center School and then went to Oliver Wolcott Technical School in Torrington. He was also a member of the volunteer junior fire squad in Sharon during his high school years.

Upon graduation he became an electrician by trade. 

Terrance D. Bannister

FALLS VILLAGE — Terrance D. Bannister, 66, died peacefully at his home on Jan. 4, 2019. He was born Nov. 6, 1952, in Fort Knox, Ky. He was the son of the late Helen I. (Stevens) and Paul Lincoln Bannister.

A graduate of Stratford High School and the University of Connecticut, Terry was employed by the Stop & Shop grocery chain. He was beginning his 30th year with the company. Locally, he was the grocery manager for the North Canaan Stop & Shop.

Guild Root Odell

COLEBROOK — Guild Root Odell, 75, passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 11, 2018, in his home, surrounded by family and friends. 

Guild “Gil” was born in Torrington on Feb. 28, 1943, to the late Leo Edward Odell and Mabel Blake. 

Gil was raised in and lived in Falls Village for 42 years before residing in Colebrook. 

He worked as a maintenance supervisor for TRW and then SKF in Winsted.

Paul J. Proper Sr.

COPAKE — Paul J. Proper Sr., 88, “The People’s Sheriff” of Columbia County, passed away at home on Dec. 20, 2018.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1930, in Egremont, Mass., the son of Olia (Pectal) and Myron Proper.

Paul served as a technical sergeant of the United States Air Force. He was on the B26 Bomber Squadron, receiving the Bronze Star during the Korean War.

Janet (Kehl) Tenney

WEST CORNWALL — Janet (Kehl) Tenney passed away peacefully on Dec. 27, 2018, at Berkshire Place in Pittsfield, Mass. She was 93.

Born in Springfield, Mass., on May 4, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Shirley (Hart) and Charles J. Kehl. She was educated at the Northfield School for Girls in Northfield, Mass., and graduated in 1943. She was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, class of 1947. 

Thomas Arthur Dennis

NORTH CANAAN — Thomas Arthur Dennis, 76, died Dec. 19, 2018, at Noble Horizons. 

He was born in Sharon on June 27, 1942, the son of Cora (Kline) and Edward Dennis. 

Thomas worked for many years in construction as a carpenter. 

He is survived by son, Thomas A. Dennis Jr.; and a grandson, Thomas A. Dennis III.

In keeping with Thomas’ wishes there are no services. 

The Birches-Roy Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements. 

Marilyn (Oshman) Yarnell

LAKEVILLE — Marilyn (Oshman) Yarnell, a lifelong summer resident of Lakeville, passed away at the age of 89 on Oct. 18, 2018. At her bedside, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., were all of her children and grandchildren.

She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., on Feb. 9, 1929, to Louis and Ruth Oshman and was raised in Mount Vernon, N.Y.  She graduated from AB Davis High School in Mount Vernon, received a BA in English literature from New York University and an MA in education from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. She was a 55-year resident of Rye Brook, N.Y.

Sarah B. (Smith) McConnell

SHARON — Sarah B. (Smith) McConnell, 28, of Ballston Spa, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 17, 2018. 

Sarah was born on June 13, 1990, in Sharon to Gordon Smith and Kelly (Smith) Osborne. She spent her elementary school years between the Webutuck and Taconic Hills school districts before moving to Cornwall Consolidated School in middle school and graduating in 2008 from Housatonic Valley Regional High School. 

Elizabeth ‘Lib’ Helen (Salembier) Mankin

NORTH CANAAN — Elizabeth “Lib” Helen (Salembier) Mankin, a noted Antiques dealer in fine and decorative arts, died Dec. 20, 2018, at Geer.  

Mrs. Mankin, who was due to celebrate her 100th birthday on Jan. 23, 2019, was born in Englewood, N.J., on Jan. 23, 1919. She was the daughter of Elizabeth (Corrigan) Salembier (1890-1966) and Rene Robert Salembier (1882-1942). She was married to Guy M. Mankin (1920-1997), a noted engineer, from 1947 until his death.
