Thomas J. Killawee

NORTH CANAAN — Thomas J. Killawee, 89, passed away at The Wesley nursing home in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Aug. 29, 2018.

There will be a burial service at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in North Canaan on Saturday, Oct. 13, from noon to 1 p.m. Then there will be a get-together with refreshments at the Bitterman Center in North Canaan from 1 to 5 p.m. 

 

Emmie Louise (Liebhart) Pilch

PINE PLAINS — Emmie Louise (Liebhart) Pilch entered eternal rest on Oct. 4, 2018.

Emmie was born on Sept. 25, 1926, in Manhattan, the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Liebhart.

Emmie attended school in Rye, N.Y. She was employed by IBM in Poughkeepsie, Merrill Lynch in White Plains and most recently by Danbury Hospital as a Patient Access Associate.

Emmie was predeceased by her son, George H. Pilch, on March 22, 2017. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Liebhart and Henry Liebhart.

Anne (Hammes) Baren

CORNWALL BRIDGE — Anne (Hammes) Baren died at home in Cornwall Bridge on Aug. 16, 2018, in the company of family and caregivers. 

She was born in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1930, the daughter of  Florence and John Hammes. 

A graduate of the Albany Academy for Girls, after studying at Mannes School of Music and Barnard College, A.B., 1952, Anne stepped into a “dream job,” helping Dr. William Kolodny open and run the Grace Rainey Rodgers Auditorium at the Met. 

Mary Ann E. (Rutledge) Polowa Miller

NORTH CANAAN — Mary Ann E. (Rutledge) Polowa Miller was born in North Canaan on Sept. 26, 1939, to Ann and Leonard Rutledge. 

She was raised in a multigenerational home: three generations living and working at her grandfather’s hotel.

Craig Dwight Ford

NORTH CANAAN — Craig Dwight Ford died peacefully at home on Sept. 16, 2018.  

Craig was born in North Canaan on April 9, 1945, to Barbara (Osborne) Ford Gailes and Kenneth C. Ford. He lived through high school in Clayton, Mass., North Canaan and Madison, Conn.  

He was predeceased by his parents; his stepfather, Thomas Gailes; and his younger sister, Cheryl Ford.  

Vincent James DiMartino

LAKEVILLE — Vincent James DiMartino, 74, of New York City and Lakeville, died Sept. 27, 2018, at Mount Sinai West Hospital. He was the partner of Emily Comstock DiMartino.

Vincent was born on Aug. 17, 1944, in New York City, the son of the late Marianina and Salvatore DiMartino.  A lifelong New Yorker, Vincent loved the vibrancy of New York City.  

Sidney Sellers Van Leer

COLEBROOK — Sidney Sellers Van Leer, 93, of Old Colebrook Road, died unexpectedly on Sept. 25, 2018. He was the husband of Arlene M. (Hein) Van Leer for 27 years. 

Born Feb. 7, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Charlotte B. (Dubbs) and Joseph W. Van Leer. 

His military service in World War II was served “with distinction” as a member of the U.S. Naval Armed Guard Gun Crew Unit, assigned to protect merchant vessels in combat situations in the European Theater of Operations. 

Vincent Selino

SHARON — Vincent Selino, 82, passed away at Vassar Brother’s Hospital on Sept. 28, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.  

Vince was born on July 1, 1936, in the town of Oyster Bay, N.Y., the son of Nancy (Collins) and Peter Selino.  

He was a longtime resident of Sharon, a town in which he was an active member of his community. 

Gustav Haller Jr.

CORNWALL BRIDGE —Gustav Haller Jr., 86, died Sept. 25, 2018, at Candlewood Valley Health Care Center in New Milford. 

Gustav was born March 28, 1932, in Greenwich, Conn., the son of the late Ida (Lind) and Gustav Haller Sr. 

After graduating high school, Gustav served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS Oriskany aircraft carrier. He was a stationary engineer for the Taconic DDSO for many years. He was a Master Mason for many years and was a longtime member and past commander of the VFW Post 9856. 

Ida (Currao) Kain

AMENIA — Ida (Currao) Kain, 89, formerly of Amenia, passed away on Sept. 18, 2018, at Pinebrook Center in Venice, Fla.

Ida was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Middletown, N.Y. Her parents were the late Edna and Joseph Currao of Goshen, N.Y.

Ida retired from Webutuck Central School District in Amenia, New York in June 1987 and from GNC Nutrition in 2007.
