Peter M. Sturtevant

FALLS VILLAGE — Peter M. Sturtevant, a resident of Falls Village for more than 45 years, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2019. He was laid to rest in the Grassy Hill Cemetery in Falls Village. 

Michael A. Varet

SALISBURY — Michael A. Varet passed away at age 77 at home in New York City on May 20, 2019. 

Born on March 9, 1942, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Guster and Frances Varet, Michael was a graduate of Yale Law School ’65, University of Pennsylvania ’62, and Midwood High School ’58.

Peter A. Kalmes

CORNWALL BRIDGE — Peter A. Kalmes passed away on Jan. 24, 2019, at his home in Cornwall Bridge, surrounded by his family.

Peter was born in Yonkers, N.Y., on Oct. 25, 1935, and grew up across the street from his beloved wife of 59 years, Nancy Banks Kalmes. 

Peter graduated from Paul Smith’s College in Paul Smiths, N.Y., and from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla. 

Peter and Nancy settled and raised their three sons, Peter, Robert and Greg in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. 

Michael A. Varet

SALISBURY — Michael A. Varet passed away at age 77 at home in New York City on May 20, 2019. 

Born on March 9, 1942, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Guster and Frances Varet, Michael was a graduate of Yale Law School ’65, University of Pennsylvania ’62, and Midwood High School ’58.

John Edwin Temple van Duyl

SHARON — John Edwin Temple van Duyl died at home on Friday, May 10, 2019, two months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was 67 years old.

Lauren Stuart (Davis) Tyler

SALISBURY — Lauren Stuart (Davis) Tyler, 66, of Taconic died peacefully April 30, 2019, at home after a brief and stoic battle with cancer. She was blessed to be at the place she loved most surrounded by those she cherished.

Dudley Hubbard Grimes

GOSHEN — Dudley Hubbard Grimes, 71, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family. 

He was the loving husband of Mary (Richards) Grimes for 36 years.  

Born Jan. 10, 1948, in Waterbury, Conn., he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Hubbard) and Charles Grimes. Dudley attended The Hotchkiss School and the University of North Carolina and received a B.A. in English from Southern Connecticut State University.  

Donald Edward Hewat

SALISBURY — Donald Edward Hewat, teacher, died peacefully at home in Salisbury on May 8, 2019. He was 94.

Born in North Adams, Mass., he attended South Kent School, served in the Navy as a submarine radio technician, and later attended Williams College, where, on a blind date, he met and fell in love with Diane Lloyd-Smith. They were married for 70 years.

In 1953, living in New York City but longing for the country, he moved with his young family to a farm and orchards on Selleck Hill in Salisbury. 

George F. Holst-Grubbe

SHARON — George F. Holst-Grubbe, 65, passed away surrounded by family on May 17, 2019, at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass., after a herculean battle against a rare blood cancer. 

He was born on Aug. 23, 1953, in Sharon, the son of Mary (Wolcott) and Reidar Holst-Grubbe. 

George was the loving husband of Michelle (Kemp) Holst-Grubbe, whom he met on a blind date. They were married on Oct. 15, 1977, at the United Church of Christ in Stanfordville, N.Y. 

The Rev. John L. Durkin

AMENIA — The Rev. John Lawrence Durkin, 79, a 10-year resident of Viera, Fla., and formerly of Amenia and Goshen, N.Y., and the Bronx, N.Y., passed away on May 6, 2019, at Health First Viera Hospital in Melbourne, Fla. 

The Rev. Durkin was the beloved pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia  for 21 years. 

Born on Sept. 12, 1939, he was the son of the late Anna Mae (O’Carrol) and John L. Durkin.
