Virginia Elizabeth (Eaton) (Sturges) Ferranti

NORTH CANAAN — Virginia Elizabeth (Eaton) (Sturges) Ferranti, widow of Thomas Dominic Ferranti, went to be with Jesus on Feb. 3, 2019. 

She was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Great Barrington, the daughter of Marion (Anson) and Hamilton “Hammy” Eaton of Lakeville.  

She graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 1951. She also graduated from St. Mary’s Baby Hospital in Albany, N.Y. 

Betty J. Clinch

PINE PLAINS — Betty J. Clinch, 89, passed away on Feb. 1, 2019, at The Baptist Home in Rhinebeck. 

She was born on Jan. 16, 1930, in Poughkeepsie, the daughter of Myra (Selfridge) and Foster Hoysradt.

She was an avid bowler, and a member of the Wildcat League in Great Barrington. 

Betty was a sales clerk for more than 20 years at B.H. Delsons in Millerton. 

She was also a waitress at the Village Diner at Gateway in Millerton, and drove a school bus for the Pine Plains Central School District. 

Kathryn ‘Dolly’ Thorpe

PINE PLAINS — Kathryn “Dolly” Thorpe, 83, passed away on Jan. 29, 2019, at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.

She was born on April 17, 1935, in West Taghkanic, N.Y., the daughter of Beulah (Coon) and Earl Tomkins.

Mrs. Thorpe worked at ITW in Lakeville for many years.

Her passion was her family. She loved to be surrounded by her children.

T. Richard Spoor

SALISBURY — T. Richard Spoor passed away on  Jan. 28, 2019, at his home in Key Largo, Fla., at the age of  84.  

Dick and his wife, Ann, maintained homes in Salisbury, Key Largo and Twin Lakes.  

Dick was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., and attended East High School in Denver before graduating from the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he was a four-year varsity track team member and belonged to Chi Psi fraternity. 

Polly W. Rodie

LAKEVILLE — Polly W. Rodie, 90, died at home in Lakeville on Jan. 30, 2019. 

Polly was born in Detroit, Mich., on April 23, 1928, to Gertrude L. (Pancoast) and Edward G. Wilmer. The family lived in Bryn Mawr, Penn.; Switzerland; and Granville, N.Y. 

Barbara J. (Coffin) Ryan

STANFORDVILLE — Barbara J. (Coffin) Ryan of Stanfordville died peacefully at home on Feb. 3, 2019.  

She was born Aug. 26, 1929, in Lithgow, N.Y., to Jeanette (Harrison) and Eugene Coffin.

She lived in Stanfordville all her life, graduating from Pine Plains High School in 1947 and then marrying Erwin Ryan in 1948.

Richard Morgan Peck

SHARON — Richard Morgan Peck died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Jan. 27, 2019, in Sharon at the age of 83.

Richard was born Jan. 8, 1936, in Danbury, Conn., to the late Helen (Morgan) and Edward Clayton Peck. 

He is survived by his wife, Constance; his children, Alan, Kandy and Gregory; his sister, Janet Tremonte of Brookfield, Conn.; his seven grandchildren; and his one great-grandson. 

He is predeceased by his sister, Marilyn; and his granddaughter, Jessica.

Susan Ann (Haupt) Gerdine

Susan Ann (Haupt) Gerdine, 86, passed away peacefully at the Deerfield Retirement Community in Asheville, N.C., on Dec. 27, 2018, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. 

She was born Susan Ann Lobo in Glen Cove, N.Y., on Nov. 21, 1932, to Ruldolfo Francisco​ ​Lobo and Susan Jeanette Brightman.

Hope Rose (Straleau) Swanson

NORTH CANAAN — Hope Rose (Straleau) Swanson, 91, passed away suddenly in her home on Jan. 23, 2019. 

Hope was born on Aug. 20, 1927, in New Rochelle, N.Y., daughter of the late Violet Maude (McElrath) and Adolph Gustav Straleau.

Hope graduated from the former Searles High School in Great Barrington. Having attended the Juilliard School of Music Summer Program, Hope was a well-known soprano soloist in Stockbridge and Great Barrington and had a lifelong love of music. 

Dr. Laurence C. ‘Topper’ Smith

NORTH CANAAN — Dr. Laurence C. “Topper” Smith, 84, passed away in Denver, Colo., on Jan. 25, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

Laurence was born and raised in North Canaan, the son of the late Loretta (Donsbough) Smith, a long time teacher in Falls Village.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Debra Smith; his brother, Peter; his former wife, Mary Gertrude Smith, née Paquette, of Kent and Denver; and his 10 children, 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
