Ledlie I. Laughlin Jr.

NORTH CORNWALL — Ledlie I. Laughlin Jr., an Episcopal priest with a vocation for creating community and seeking justice in urban contexts, died at home on Jan. 21, 2019. He was 88 years old. Ledlie loved conversation with friends and family, and delighted in language, beauty and art.

Summing up his 50 years of parish ministry, Ledlie said simply, “I helped congregations figure out how they were called to respond to the needs of others around them, and to do so.” 

Ruth (Stoddard) Dutcher

NORTH CANAAN — Ruth (Stoddard) Dutcher, 87, of Avon, Conn., passed away on Jan. 18, 2019. 

Ruth was the beloved wife of Maurice A. Dutcher for 63 years. 

Ruth was born Dec. 20, 1931, in New Haven, Conn., to the late Dr. Paul and Ernestine Stoddard. Ruth was brought up in North Canaan. After her marriage to Maurice in 1955 they moved to Avon.

George H. ‘Rowdy Ranger’ Romano

CORNWALL — George H. “Rowdy Ranger” Romano, 84, of Cornwall entered into rest on Jan. 15, 2019, at Sharon Hospital with his loving family by his side. 

He was the devoted husband of 58 years to Lillian M. (Wallace) Romano. 

George was born in Derby, Conn., on April 9, 1934, son of the late Etta Mae (VanDeusen) and Raphael Romano. He was a New Milford resident before moving to Cornwall in 1977. 

Joseph ‘Joey’ Damien Sexton

TORRINGTON — Joseph “Joey” Damien Sexton passed away on Jan. 10, 2019, at Hartford Hospital. He was 57 years old. 

He was born in Greenwich, Conn., on Jan. 19, 1961. He attended Salisbury Central School and Housatonic Valley Regional High School. 

Jessica Elizabeth Tcherepnine

MILLBROOK — Jessica Elizabeth Tcherepnine died peacefully at home on Dec. 31, 2018, at the age of 80 after a long illness. 

English by birth, she was the daughter of William Barclay Harris and Elizabeth Milnes Coates, and the devoted wife of Peter Tcherepnine for 45 years, whom she met in New York and married in 1973. 

Barbara (Bales) Smith

LAKEVILLE — Barbara (Bales) Smith, 82, died peacefully on Dec.15, 2018, with her family by her side. 

Barbara was born in 1936 in Gary, Ind., to Katherine and Charles Bales. She attended both St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Colorado to become a registered nurse. 

In 1963, she married the late Andrew B. Smith and they eventually settled in Burlington, Conn. 

She was an IV nurse at New Britain General Hospital for most of her nursing career. 

Peter C. Roosa

AMENIA — Peter C. Roosa, 68, a longtime resident of Amenia and formerly of Millbrook, passed away on Jan. 11, 2019, at his home in Amenia surrounded by his family. 
Mr. Roosa was an industrial arts teacher at Fishkill Correctional Facility in Fishkill, N.Y. He later worked as a salesman at Audia Motors in Millbrook  for 25 years. He was honored to work for Bob Audia. 
Born on Oct. 12, 1950, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of the late Carl Siah and Anne (Swick) Roosa.

Dorothy “Dottie / Flossy” (Riiska) Jacquier

EAST CANAAN — Dorothy “Dottie / Flossy” (Riiska) Jacquier, 88, passed away peacefully at her home Jan. 13, 2019, preparing lunch for all at Laurelbrook Farm, which is what she loved to do. 

Born in Winsted on Aug.14, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Bertha (Lagier) and Frank Riiska. 

Jean C. (Peterson) Deming

ASHLEY FALLS — Jean C. (Peterson) Deming, 94, of Ashley Falls died Jan. 10, 2019, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was the widow of Harry R. Deming, who passed on Sept. 14, 2001. 

Jean was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of the late Helen Mae and Jesse Peterson.

A graduate of Torrington High School, Class of 1943, Jean worked as a “Rosie the Riveter,” building airplane wings for the Torrington Company from 1943 to 1945. 

John Findlay Scott

WEST CORNWALL — John Findlay Scott, 88, of West Cornwall, died Dec. 25, 2018, at home. He was the loving husband of Julia Mary (Boulton) Scott.
