Shirley M. Bartow

SOUTHFIELD, MASS. — Shirley M. Bartow, 61, passed away peacefully at her home April 8, 2011, with her family by her side, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Shirley was born Nov. 11, 1949, in Winsted. She graduated from Northwestern Regional School No. 7 in Winsted, in 1966, and attended nursing school at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford.

Shirley married Carl W. Bartow Jr. on Dec. 14, 1968. She worked at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Canaan for more than 35 years and loved her job.

Memorial Service - Leo Richard Segalla

NORTH CANAAN — A  graveside memorial service with full military honors for Leo Richard Segalla, 86,who died Feb. 5, 2011, will be held on April 13 at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Cemetery in North Canaan.
Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Vera (Carlson) Olsen

MILLERTON — Vera (Carlson) Olsen, 93, of Palm City, Fla., died at the Hospice House of Palm City on March 23, 2011.

She was born Jan. 17, 1918, and raised in Darien, Conn., the daughter of the late Katherine (Austin) and James F. Carlson.

She attended Darien public schools and graduated from Darien High School and Connecticut Teachers College. She taught in the public school system of Darien for many years.

Eileen M. Strauss

AMENIA — Eileen M. Strauss, 79, a lifelong resident of Amenia, died peacefully at her home on March 29, 2011.

Born Jan. 27, 1932, in Sharon, she was the daughter of the late Florence (Culligan) and John McEnroe. Eileen graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Amenia and attended Krissler Business School in Poughkeepsie. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Beauty Culture in Amenia.

Mrs. Strauss was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia. On Aug. 16, 1952, she married Guenther Strauss in Amenia. Mr. Strauss died Nov. 21, 1999.

Shirley A. Smith

SALISBURY — Shirley A. Smith, 84, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at Yale-New Haven Hospital on March 31, 2011, surrounded by her family. In her life she touched many hearts with her contagious laughter and lively sense of humor.

She was born March 2, 1927, in Torrington, the eldest of nine children born to Margaret (Carnegie) and Louis Curtiss of Norfolk.

Shirley spent many years as an employee at Becton Dickinson in North Canaan. Upon retirement, she cared for her grandchildren and for other children who also knew her as “Grandma.”

Stanley M. Segalla

NORTH CANAAN — Stanley M. Segalla, 97, of Ashley Falls Road died March 31, 2011, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Canaan. He was the husband of Anita R. (Cantele) Segalla. Stanley was born in North Canaan on March 5, 1914, to the late Justina (Pasin) and John Segalla.

Stanley owned the Stateline Package Store in North Canaan. He opened the business in 1950, and ran the business for 56 consecutive years until he retired in 2006.

AMENIA — A memorial celebration of the life and work of Dr. Nancy Offenhauser will be held in Sharon, on Sunday, April 17, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Marion Winsor

MILLERTON — Marion Winsor, 84, recently of Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Canaan, died on April 3, 2011.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 16, 1927, daughter of Eurie Inkpen and Henry George Rice.

She was a member of the North East Baptist Church in Millerton and of the Central Baptist Church of Canton, Ohio.

Anita (Kollstede) Westsmith

LAKEVILLE — Mrs. Anita (Kollstede) Westsmith, 98, a longtime resident of the Lakeville area, passed away peacefully at her home on April 4, 2011.

Anita was born Feb. 17, 1913, in Providence, R.I. She attended Dana Hall School, and studied fashion design both in New York and Paris at the Parsons School of Design and the Sorbonne.

She and her father left Paris in 1936, and moved to Coronado, Calif., where she met and married her husband, Dr. Richard Alan Westsmith, with whom she had a happy marriage of almost 60 years.

Elsie McBroom

PINE PLAINS — Elsie McBroom, 86, passed away on April 1, 2011, at the Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie.
She was born Dec. 20, 1924, in New York City, the daughter of the late Rose (Arce) and Emanuel Jiminez.

Mrs. McBroom worked in manufacturing for K & E Taconic Products in Millerton.
She was a hardworking mother and loving wife who loved animals.
