Ruth (Ryan) Alexander

FALLS VILLAGE — Ruth (Ryan) Alexander, 77, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on June 16, 2011, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation in North Canaan. She was the widow of the late Alex Alexander.

She was born June 3, 1934, in Waterbury, Conn., the daughter of the late Julia (Maxwell) and Frances Ryan of Plymouth, Conn. Ruth was a graduate of Terryville High School.

With her second husband, Alex, who was a chef, and her family, she ran Alexander’s Village Inn in Falls Village from 1971 until 1986. She will be remembered as the hostess who greeted guests.

Edgar George ‘Ed’ Barber

NORTH CANAAN — Edgar George “Ed” Barber, 90, of Margaret Lane died June 13, 2011, at The Kent in Kent. He was the husband of the late Mary Veronica (Reid) Barber.

Ed was born April 1, 1921, in Gregory, S.D., son of the late Stella (Baney) and Benjamin Barber. Ed was employed as a supervisor by the Long Island Lighting Company. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and enjoyed gardening, animals, babies, woodworking and reading.

Robert Louis Consolini

NORTH CANAAN — Robert Louis Consolini, 81, passed away on June 14, 2011, at Geer Village, where he had lived for the past six years.

Born in Great Barrington, Bob and his younger brother, John, grew up on East Main Street in North Canaan in a house their father built. His parents, Sophie and Louis Consolini, were the proprietors of a number of different businesses in the area, including a bakery, a locker plant, a drive-in movie theater, a bowling alley and various real estate holdings.

A. Whitney Ellsworth

SALISBURY — A. Whitney Ellsworth, 75, died at home on June 18, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Priscilla (Wear) Ellsworth of Salisbury.

He was born May 31, 1936, in New York City, the son of Esther (Stevens) and Duncan Stuart Ellsworth.

He attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H. After earning a bachelor’s degree in 1958 from Harvard and performing six months’ active duty in the Army Reserves, he was hired at The Atlantic Monthly.

John ‘Jack’ Falconer Fisher III

LAKEVILLE —John “Jack” Falconer Fisher III died peacefully June 14, 2011, in Barre, Vt. He was the husband of the late Florence (Kendall) Fisher, whom he married in 1954.

He was 97 years old, born on March 21, 1914, in Atlantic City, N.J. the son of Hannah (Marter) and John F. Fisher Jr.

Jack had many careers and hobbies throughout his life. He was often referred to as “Gentleman Jack.” He loved nature, the mountains and a good gin martini.

Harry A. Gerowe Sr.

KENT — Harry A. Gerowe Sr., 80, of Brookfield, Conn., passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on June 10, 2011.

Harry was a licensed lay minister, working part-time for more than a decade as the coordinator of membership care and involvement at the Congregational Church of Brookfield, where he and his wife, Evelyn, had been members since 1962.

Harry married Evelyn in 1955 in Trumbull, Conn. She survives at home.

Eric E. Haight

CLINTON CORNERS — Eric E. Haight, 74, passed away June 13, 2011, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie after a short illness.

He was born in Poughkeepsie on March 29, 1937, the son of the late Thelma (Coffin) and Paul Haight.

He was a member of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club, Sharon Audubon and the Stanford Historical Society. He also was a former member of Stanford Fire Company.

He enjoyed hiking, walking the Rail Trail and bird watching and was an avid Red Sox fan.
Mr. Haight coached the Stanford Twins Little League team.

John P. Whalen

DOVER PLAINS — John P. Whalen, 71, a 52-year resident of Dover Plains, died June 17, 2011, at his home.

He was born May 16, 1940, in Chateaugay, N.Y., the son of the late Stella (Brickey) and Patrick Whalen. On March 3, 1962, in Dover Plains he married Donna Kniffen, who survives at home.

Mr. Whalen earned an associate’s degree in childcare from Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie in 1970.

He was a midline supervisor at the Wassaic Developmental Center for 34 years before retiring in 1995.

Harold Victor Klare

PINE PLAINS — Harold Victor Klare, 99, a resident since 1954 of Jordan Lane Farm in Pine Plains, died April 19, 2011. At the time of his death, Mr. Klare was in a nursing home in Sunderland, Mass.

His wife, the former Martha Elizabeth Jordan, whom he married May 31, 1940, in Jamaica, N.Y., predeceased him in March 1995.

Harold Klare was born March 7, 1912, in Ridgewood, N.Y., the son of Freda (Welz) and August Klare. He graduated magna cum laude in 1933 from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
