Shirley Elizabeth (Tanner) Rivard

MILLERTON — Shirley Elizabeth (Tanner) Rivard, 54, passed away July 23, 2011, at her residence after a long and brave battle with cancer.

She was born Aug. 20, 1956, in Sharon, the daughter of Bertha (McCauley) and Arthur Tanner.

Shirley was an amazing person, who selflessly dedicated her time to taking care of others. She recently retired from Taconic DDSO in Wassaic, after serving there for 34 years.

John Richard Kascenska

MIDDLETOWN SPRINGS, Vt. — John Richard Kascenska, 78, of Middletown Springs, formerly of Winsted, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2011, at his home following a long illness, with his wife and family by his side.

He was born on Oct. 31, 1932, in Winsted, the son of O. Helen (Tamminen) and John J. Kascenska.

Calling hours were held Wednesday, July 20, at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Graveside services will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 22, in the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph.

PINE MEADOW — James L. Parrott Jr. of Pine Meadow died July 17, 2011. Calling hours were held July 19 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home. Graveside services were held July 20 at Pine Grove Cemetery, Pine Meadow. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, New Hartford, has care of arrangements.

Morton J. Bloch

SHARON — Morton J. Bloch, 83, died July 13, 2011, in Sarasota, Fla., after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born July 28, 1927, in Sharon to Lena and Irving Bloch of Millerton. He graduated from Millerton High School in 1944 and Bard College in 1947, and also attended New York University.

In 1950, Mort took over the family business, Bloch’s Furniture Store, when his father became ill. He operated the store until his retirement in 1985.

He married Elaine F. Feinberg of Patchogue, N.Y., in 1954. She predeceased him in 1991.

Valerie Pascal Delacorte

SHARON — Valerie Pascal Delacorte passed away on July 14, 2011, at her home in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Valerie was the devoted wife of the late George T. Delacorte, founder of Dell Publishing Company and a well-known New York and Florida philanthropist.

Valerie was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1919 and educated at the Ursuline Convent. Graced with stunning beauty, intellect and elegant style, Valerie became a stage and film actress in Hungary under the name Hídvéghy Valéria.

NORTH CANAAN — A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 23, from noon to 3 p.m. at Geer Village to celebrate the life of Stephanie Wilner Kay. The service will feature her artwork and a buffet.

Gabor ‘Gabby’ Farkas

AMENIA — Gabor “Gabby” Farkas, 74, died at his home on July 10, 2011, surrounded by loving family and friends.

He was born in Tet, Hungary, on Jan. 14, 1937, the son of the late Margit and Gyula Farkas. In January 1957, he made the journey from Tet alone to the United States to begin a new life. Here he met his loving wife Elizabeth Pinczes, who also made the journey to the United States with her own family.

On Nov. 26, 1960, they wed at the Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia.

He was retired, and had worked at Kent Manufacturing Company and A.W. Manufacturing as a machinist.

Jean Hunker

NORTH CANAAN — Jean Hunker, who was born Feb. 29, 1960, the daughter of the late Mary Ann and Arthur “Butch” Hunker, passed away peacefully June 29, 2011, in Ardmore, Okla.

She is survived by a daughter, Danielle Hunker Myers and her husband, Keith, of Ellenton, Fla.; her brothers, Robert Hunker of North Canaan and John and Linda Hunker of Ashley Falls, Mass.; a grandson, Mason Myers; and two nephews, Jake and Erik Hunker.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Myers.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
